26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s Matthean Gospel, 21:28-32, invites us to reflect upon and embrace ongoing conversion in our faith, to live our faith authentically through actions (Catholic Action), to Trust in God’s Mercy, and
guard against spiritual complacency and hypocrisy. Here are some key points to consider:
- The Primacy of Conversion and Repentance: The son who initially refuses but then later obeys symbolizes sinners who repent and foll0w God. Catholic teaching emphasizes that it is never too late to come to God through sincere repentance and conversion.
- Faith and Works Together: Saying the right thing (the second son who says “I Will!) is insufficient without corresponding action. The Catholic faith teaches that both faith and works (obedience, charity, living the gospels) are essential. (cf. James 2:14-26)
- God’s Mercy and Inclusion: Jesus highlights that those who society often deems unworthy (tax collectors and prostitutes) can enter into the Kingdom before the self-righteous religious leaders if they repent and believe. This highlights God’s Mercy and the call to humility.
- The Danger of Hard-Heartedness: To reject, by the religious leaders, John the Baptist’s message reveals the perils of stubbornness and pride. Hardening of the heart, spiritually, resists His Grace.
- Discerning True Obedience: Authentic obedience—not just lip service—challenges the believer to examine their own actions and sincerity of heart in following the commands of God.
The above might just be a good daily examination of conscience.
