This weekend’s Gospel (Matthew 5:38-48) call us to "go beyond the expected responses of human interrelations," in other words—not to just to seek the "lowest common denominator" but rather reach for the highest common denominator with regards to our interactions with others. Practically speaking, the Lord asks us to "go beyond" limited love and finite actions so that we become more like God…perfect in our love and concern for others which motivates our will and our actions. What does it mean for Jesus to fulfill the law? Jesus sees in the law the means to the fulfillment of time (“until all things have taken place”), when the law will be replaced by righteous relationships within the kingdom of heaven. The fundamental law is gift of self to others. When self-giving is lacking in any act of keeping the law, the law in fact is not kept. This weekend we hear “Your light must shine before others, so that, they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:13-16) This reiterates the first reading’s call to serve all those in need—the hungry and the homeless—being one with our brothers and sisters just as a family is one.
