One may either give money to shelters to feed the hungry or by volunteering at a shelter to serve meals to the homeless. Other ways to “give alms” would be to volunteer your time to read to the blind, tutor a child in a distressed home situation, or visit a neighbor or individual in a nursing home. Time is so precious.
Prayer is nothing less than conversation with God. And indeed, God wants to hear from us and He most certainly wants to speak to us. This conversation can only take place in the silence of hearts. Setting time aside from the radio, the iPod, the iPhone, the television, and Almsgiving relates to giving of our gifts and talents—they can be both financial gifts and talents as in skills and abilities—to the needs of others who are less fortunate then ourselves. life in general—is the way we can open our hearts and our minds to the gentle whispering of God—where and when He will fill our minds and hearts with His Will, where He will illustrate to us what He wants us to accomplish in our families, our communities, our work and our lives. Take time each day—30 minutes—and listen to God. Start by saying a prayer, listen to some sacred music, read a brief verse of Sacred Scripture. Quiet the busyness of life, and invite God into your day. Ask Him to bless you and your day, and to make it worthy of His presence. From there, let God be in control.
