St. Francis Hospital in Hartford is—and must be—a gem in the Crown of the Archdiocese of Hartford—as a Catholic institution was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery in 1897, continuing today the healing ministry of Christ, it is the largest Catholic hospital in New England with 617-acute care beds and 65 bassinets. Today St. Francis Hospital is owned by Trinity Health New England, a Catholic healthcare corporation and still works closely with the archdiocese and the Catholic traditions of caring for everyone.
In the Catholic tradition, part of physical healthcare and healing is spiritual care, care for the soul. In that tradition, people—patients—are not just bodies to be healed but spiritual beings who are more fully healed and cared for by the Word of God and the Sacraments of His Catholic Church. This is also supported by scientific studies (e.g., Duke University’s Harold G. Koening, M.D., exclusive analysis of more than 1500 reputable medical studies “indicate people who are more religious and pray more have better mental and physical health.”) These studies illustrate that faith helps one to heal faster than those who do not.
But of the spiritual healing process is the Word of God and the reception of the Eucharist. I am therefore asking if anyone would be interested in being a Eucharistic Minister at St. Francis Hospital? The hospital provides training and will work with you on scheduling. I recently received a note from the of staff chaplain of the hospital commenting on the work of our parishioner, Tom Clarke, who serves as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Francis. Noting his dedication, faith and collaboration with the spiritual care department makes all the difference in the world. I wish to publically thank Tom for his desire to serve God in caring for others. It is a wonderful ministry and provides not only healing for the patient, but great joy to the Eucharistic Ministers who know they are bringing Christ to someone in need.
If you would like to consider becoming a Eucharistic Minister at St. Francis Hospital, please talk to me after Mass or call the parish office, 6581642, and I am happy to fill you in. It is most definitely something to consider. Thank you
