December 15, 2012Advent is a season of Hope.
The teens of our parish never cease to amaze me with their active hope and energy. This fall they raised $6700 to fund the FEED THE HUNGRY program for one year. They fasted for 24 hours and slept in cardboard boxes to learn about the plight of the homeless. T-shirts were designed and tie-dyed to be worn out in the community while serving. Both Jr. and Sr. High groups spent Saturdays FEEDING THE HUNGRY IN HARTFORD ( a new group experience for the Jr. High.) 55 pies and 100 containers of applesauce were made for soup kitchen Thanksgiving meals.
Gloves were collected and mittens were sewn for those who have no place to call home. These are just some of the ways the youth in our parish actively hope for a better world. I am grateful for their “YES” to all that they are invited to do, to be Christ in the world. It makes me think of how God chose Mary, Our Blessed Mother who was just a teenager at the time.
Mary’s courageous YES was one that changed the course of human history. God does work through our teenagers to bring HOPE to the world. I thank the parishioners of St. Catherine of Siena for supporting them in everything that they do. We look forward to a second season of Youth Ministry after the Christmas break !
