In today’s Gospel, regarding the end of time, we hear Jesus say, “Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”"But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." Christ’s words are both reassuring and provoking. There will be a Final Day (will, can I be prepared?) and that we do not know when or where or how it will happen. This might provoke fear and uncertainty. The unknown is always scary. But we also hear comfortable words when Christ tells us that His Words —God’s absolute truths of peace, hope and love—will not pass away.
So how do we prepare for the unknown? How do we make ourselves ready for that seemingly fear-filled ETA of the end of time? In faith, Christ teaches us that we must not stand before God in fear and trembling on the Final Day, rather by living a life of active discipleship we can come before the Father with true hope that, even as humans who fail from time-to-time, we lived our lives faithfully—not perfectly—using the gifts He gave us in compassion, mercy and love. The Church, along with many other organizations, gives us opportunity after opportunity to be His disciples. It simply takes will. “Will” we be His disciples, and how “will” we do it. The choice if freely ours.
