Background: The Health and Healing Ministry began when Diane Smith approached Father Michael Whyte, pastor, and asked about the possibility of beginning a Parish Nurse Program at St. Catherine of Siena. From its inception, the desire of Father Whyte, Diane and the beginning members was that the Health and Healing Ministry would endeavor to meet the needs of the whole person – body, mind and spirit.
Mission Statement: The mission of the Health and Healing Ministry is to promote a healthy lifestyle and spiritual wellbeing with reliance on God’s healing comfort and care during stressful life situations.
How the Ministry Operates: Over the past few years, the ministry has offered opportunities that give life and witness to our mission statement. There has been an annual flu clinic offered each fall as well as a “Walk to Jerusalem” event that occurred during Lent in 2013 and 2014. The overall purpose of this latter program was to encourage a healthy moving lifestyle, a bit of friendly competition among parishioners as well as the opportunity to reflect upon Jesus’ last days and his final journey toward Jerusalem and the Cross. The Health and Healing Committee sponsored a Life Care Seminar in April of 2014; an exercise class as well as a couple of “healthy choices” at a few monthly coffees and a Healing Prayer Workshop in February 2015 that was presented by the Archdiocese of Hartford’s Healing Prayer Ministry. As a result of this workshop, the Health and Healing Ministry hosted a healing Mass at St. Catherine’s with Father Michael as our celebrant on November 13, 2015. We hope to be able to continue to schedule Healing Masses a few times throughout the year.
When Does the Ministry Meet: Meetings are usually held once a month on a Friday morning. Meeting time and place can be found in the weekly bulletin. Our meetings begin and end with prayer. Our main focus is constant - to discern how God might be inviting us to bring Christ’s compassionate love and mercy to those in need of healing.
